40,000 MW for Electric Choice
February 2003
Bigger than the New England or New York ISO loads, competitively served
customers now represent over 40,000 peak megawatts. The growth is not just in
Texas: customer electric choice is growing in Maryland, the District of
Columbia, Massachusetts and, despite many obstacles, remains strong in
California.
XENERGY research released in January shows dramatic growth in the US competitive
electricity supply over the past 18 months, despite on-going energy industry
woes. Since mid-2001, the competitively priced electricity supply more than
doubled. An estimated 40,000 megawatts of electricity demand are currently being
competitively supplied, versus an estimated 15,000 megawatts mid-2001.
